EMPLOYMENT
The first step in turning around the state’s economy and putting people back to work is getting control of the state budget. For years, state government has refused to make the tough choices it had to make to get a grip on the fiscal crisis confronting it. Members of the legislature have been reactive rather than proactive and that has to change. Hoping things will get better won’t create jobs. We must act and immediately:
•impose a wage and hiring freeze throughout state government;
•modify the prevailing wage;
•repeal the Pacheco Law;
•put an end to unpredictable, changing tax laws; and
•stop economic policies that favor a select group of businesses and hurt small businesses.
As your state senator, I will work with any one to make Massachusetts businesses more competitive. I will work to support good ideas no matter who has the idea or who will get the credit. Results count and we must demand accountability.
ETHICS
The repeated ethical lapses on Beacon Hill have eroded confidence in state government. We must hold our elected officials to the highest standards of ethical behavior and we must expect them to demand more of themselves and their colleagues.
Transparency and accountability are the keys to restoring confidence in our state government. For too long, those on Beacon Hill have acted as though the people of Massachusetts worked for them. Legislators have been more concerned about what leadership thought and went along to get along. As your state senator,
•I will insist all state legislators uphold the highest standards of integrity;
•I will not support any one for a leadership position who fails to meet those standards or turns a blind eye to others’ ethical lapses.
EDUCATION
Education is a civil right. We must do every thing we can to close the achievement gap, because we must empower every child to compete in the 21st century economy. It is unacceptable, if even one child is trapped in an underperforming school. School choice and competition are critical to strengthening our public schools and, therefore, to our future. In addition, school funding must be fair and consistent. Promises of funding made, must be kept. As your state senator, I will:
•work to lift the cap on charter schools and increase the number of pilot and magnet schools;
•work to ensure that promises of funding made, are kept .
